How will you transform social studies education?
Thinking Nation exists to transform social studies education for the future of democracy. It’s in our mission statement. It’s what keeps us going. It’s why we create the resources we create. It’s why we support schools and teachers in professional development the way we do. It’s why we talk so much about assessment. We value student thinking, so we better evaluate it, too.
As we say wherever we go, teaching historical thinking is a civic duty. Empowering students to think deeply in order to engage with the information they are presented with and the larger world around them is a teaching imperative. But how are we doing with that imperative? I don’t think so well; or at least not as well as we could be.
This reflection is why we launched the New Minimum Standard in 2026. As the country seeks to commemorate a constitutional democracy built on ideas, we hope that the social studies classroom can intentionally equip and empower the younger generation of citizens. Students deserve to be able to practice their inherent human agency endowed to them.
The Declaration of Independence reminds us that “they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These rights are actions. Learning about life or about liberty is not the same as experiencing life or liberty. So, in our classrooms, are students learning about the past or experiencing history?
To be clear, this does not mean that every lesson needs to be an over-the-top experience. That is frankly not feasible for every teacher, every day. But creating a curious classroom where questions guide the process and students practice deep thinking is. Historical thinking as the root of the classroom creates a curious culture that challenges students to engage with the past, not simply remember it. This is where human agency grows.
Guided by this mission of empowerment and transformation, we at Thinking Nation work with schools around the country. We believe that students deserve to be prepared to renovate our democracy. They deserve high expectations, human-centered scaffolding, and robust opportunities for inquiry and reflection. We believe that teachers deserve the support to do this well without feeling overburdened. We believe that schools deserve a better process to align as departments, set meaningful goals, and better data to drive instruction. We believe that social studies education deserves a transformation to make this all happen.
So, we built a better way. We built protocols and strategies to teach historical thinking well. We built easy-to-implement assessments that measure student success in how they think, not what they know. We built better ways to drive department-wide collaboration and goal setting. We saw real gaps in the field, so we built solutions.
Spring is an opportunity for new beginnings. As I met with so many educators from around the country over the last month, I saw a hunger for those new beginnings.
